Meet the Herd: Say Hello to Cam

People & Culture

Before Cam Mullen became Yik Yak’s Lead Community Developer, he was actually our first official intern!

In March of 2014, an enthusiastic college student from Vanderbilt contacted us when he saw on Twitter that we were looking for interns. Brooks and Tyler could tell that he was really passionate about the app, so they hired him right away. Cam graduated that May and moved to Atlanta to continue his internship and was eventually offered a full-time gig a few months later.

Cam’s innate ability to befriend just about everyone he meets is one of the many reasons he’s such a GREAT community developer. From building our campus rep program from the ground up, to developing partnerships with both online and real life communities, to organizing events at college campuses around the world, Yik Yak just wouldn’t be where it is today without this guy.

Q. What have been your favorite projects to work on while at Yik Yak?

A. The Fall 2014 Yik Yak tour. We drove a 45 foot tour bus from Washington all the way down the west coast, visiting 30 schools. This was the first time the Yak visited a college campus, and it was great peeking into these communities, watching the Yaktivity rise after the tour bus left.

Q. Where did you attend college and what was the most useful thing you learned?

A. I went to Vanderbilt University and I majored in Economics, so I appreciate the concept of a “sunk cost.” A sunk cost is a cost that is no longer recoverable by any means, so you shouldn’t keep spending money or time in something just because you’re already invested in it.

Q. What are your hobbies outside of work?

A. I’m a big fan of playing piano and traveling. My next trip, I want to go to Tel Aviv.

Q. What inspired you to work as a Community Developer?

A. When I was in 8th grade, I started the “My Name is Cameron” group on Facebook. I brought 7,000 Camerons together. We shared funny stories, nicknames, and we almost organized a Cameron convention in Las Vegas.

I’ve been developing online communities ever since.

Q. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

A. I would love to learn how to talk to animals. I would befriend bears and squirrels and ants and trade favors with them. Imagine hanging out with 10,000 butterflies — what could be better?

Q. What songs are included in the soundtrack to your life?

A. 1.) “Strobe” by Deadmau5, 2.) Watch the Throne album by Kanye West and Jay Z, 3.) “In Your Atmosphere” by John Mayer.

Q. What’s your personal mantra?

A. Kill it with kindness.

Q. Who’s the funniest person in the office and why?

A. Marcus, for sure. His laugh makes you laugh and he’s always laughing.

Q. Would you rather be a tiny elephant or a giant hamster?

A. I would rather be a tiny elephant. I could fit in your pocket — that would be cool. I’ve never been in a pocket before.
