In this week’s edition of Meet the Herd, you’re going to get to know Julie Zhou, our Lead Product Growth Manager! Even though our HQ is in Atlanta, we actually have a few select individuals working out of an office in San Francisco, and Julie is one of those special people.
Julie frequently visits our office in Atlanta, but she also has some pretty cool technology that allows her to interact with us when she’s not here. Friends, I’d also like to introduce you to the Telepresence Robot (see image #4).
This cool piece of technology means that Julie can meander the hallways, pop into the game room to see who’s the current ping pong champ, and sit in on important meetings.
Q. What’s your favorite thing about working at Yik Yak?
A: The people!
Q. What have been your favorite projects to work on while at Yik Yak?
A. I love working on projects that help the team learn more about how the Yik Yak community interacts with the app. We have a lot of super devoted power users, we’ll be launching lots of features in the upcoming months that should make them really happy.
Q. Where did you attend college and what was the most useful thing you learned?
A. I went to Harvard, and after spending time with some of the smartest people on the planet I realized that you never, ever stop learning. The moment that you think you’ve become an expert at anything is usually the moment when you realize how much you have yet to learn.
Q. What are your hobbies outside of work?
A. Traveling, walking everywhere in San Francisco, cooking, rock climbing, practicing for my first 5k, and training to be an American Ninja Warrior
Q. What inspired you to work as a Product Manager?
A. I majored in economics, and my first job after college was marketing at Google, an incredibly data-driven company. Since then, I’ve been fascinated with learning all about how users fall in love with products and thinking up ways to make that process easier.
Q. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Q. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
A. Whatever Songza thinks that I’m in the mood for.
Q. What’s your personal mantra?
A. “Long-term consistency trumps short term intensity.” From the one and only Bruce Lee.
Q. Who’s the funniest person in the office?
A. Me, since I’m usually the one controlling the telepresence robot.
Q. Would you rather be a tiny elephant or a giant hamster?
A. A tiny elephant, assuming that I could maintain the strength and speed of my normal size while in a shrunken state.
Well, now you know the ins and outs of Julie. Make sure to keep your eyes open for her debut on American Ninja Warrior!
