Meet the Interns - Part 1

People & Culture
Group1-3127

Throughout the summer, we’ve had the opportunity to work with twelve fantastic interns from schools all over the U.S. We have interns majoring in biology, marketing, chemical engineering and a variety of other academic disciplines. Each intern brings their unique skills, passions and personality to the Yik Yak herd.

Because our interns are so special to us, we wanted to share a little bit about them with you guys. This is the first of a four-part blog series in which we’ll introduce you to our summer interns, and let them tell you a little about themselves and what it’s like interning at Yik Yak.

This week, we’re introducing you to Abigail, Catherine, and Brock!

Abigail Hoffman, Marketing Intern

Q. Where are you currently going to school and what are you studying?

A. I go to Wofford College in South Carolina (Go Terriers!), and I’m studying Biology, Teacher Education, and Studio Art.

Q. Where’s your favorite place to hang out while you’re at school?

A. My favorite places to be on campus are: wherever my friends are, in my hammock, or within walking distance of coffee.I also frequent Krispy-Kreme at least five times a week.

Q. Why did you want to intern at Yik Yak?

A. I’m sort of addicted to social media. Slightly. A lot. I believe that YikYak has a great power to shape communities and college dynamics for the better, and I wanted to be an active part of that movement.

Q. What kind of projects are you working on?

A. Right now I’m working on some creative writing projects and different forms of college outreach. I’m also doing some behind the scenes work for finding data and funny content to use for other projects. So basically, I read funny yaks and get paid to do it. (Feel free to be jealous now. It’s okay.)

Q. Who’s your favorite co-worker at Yik Yak and why?

A. This is difficult! Everyone here has been so welcoming and friendly. I love the work environment and how open everyone is. I’d have to say my boss, Sharon, because she encourages me to be creative and explore different marketing projects, and she is there if I need someone to talk to or ask a question. Also, because she’s totally cool and an awesome female DJ. #inspirationstation

Q. What’s the coolest part about interning at Yik Yak?

A. We get free coffee. Duh. Just kidding… One of my favorite things is just being a part of the action, the big picture. It’s kind of amazing to even be a tiny part of something this big. But the free coffee and snacks are also a huge perk.

Q. If there were one song you had to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A. Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance” literally never gets old. Best song for singing/yelling/dancing in the car. I like driving, so this is a necessary qualification. Or, Phil Collins can rock some Disney music, just saying. Mmm.

Catherine Grevet, User Experience Research Intern

Q. Where are you currently going to school and what are you studying?

A. I’m a Ph.D. student at Georgia Tech in the School of Interactive Computing. My research is in Human-Computer Interaction and Social Computing. I did my undergrad in Computer Science at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

Q. Where’s your favorite place to hang out while you’re at school?

A. As a grad student, my lab is my home on campus. My labmates and I have made the space our own, with colorful and eclectic lamps, bean-bags, and decorations that invite people to sit around and talk. The greatest place to sit and think is our big half-sphere purple lounge seat.

Q. Why did you want to intern at Yik Yak?

A. Yik Yak has been a topic of discussion in my research field where we study topics relevant to how people interact with each other online. Anonymous systems present a number of important social challenges, so studying these questions in the leading anonymous platform is incredibly exciting.

Q. What kind of projects are you working on?

A. I study how Yik Yak users interact with the app to help inform future design directions and to improve our current product.

Q. Who’s your favorite co-worker at Yik Yak and why?

A. The entire team is wonderful. What’s great about Yik Yak is that everyone knows everyone, it’s very collegial and easy to talk to people. With a special shout out to Ben, Joe, Julie, Zack, Derek, and Scooter who help me on a daily basis shape my work and accompany me in the wild on research projects.

Q. What’s the coolest part about interning at Yik Yak?

A. I think it’s so cool to feel included in the team and to get to do the type of work that I would do as if I was here full-time. I have the freedom to take initiative on the studies that I think would improve the product, and get to contribute to some impactful decisions.

Q. If there were one song you had to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A. Tough question, I’ll go with Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World.

Brock Barley, Community Development Intern

Q. Where are you currently going to school and what are you studying?

A. I currently attend the University of Alabama where I’m double majoring in Marketing and Economics.

Q. Where’s your favorite place to hang out while you’re at school?

A. My bed. I definitely enjoy getting my sleep. When I’m not doing that, I try and stay outdoors as much as possible. I love going down by the river with just my Eno.

Q. Why did you want to intern at Yik Yak?

A. I really wanted to help grow an app that has had such a positive effect on so many people, including myself.

Q. What kind of projects are you working on?

A. My main focus has been on the Campus Rep program, from recruiting to program planning. It has been a blast working with the team; even the late nights at the office! I’ve also had the chance to work with the Field Marketing team and travel to events across the country

Q. Who’s your favorite co-worker at Yik Yak and why?

A. Everyone is such a family here so it’s hard to choose just one person, but I guess I’d have to say Tas.She’s incredibly good at her job, gives me advice for my work, and is also just an awesome person (who did her best at kicking my butt at the gym this summer)

Q. What’s the coolest part about interning at Yik Yak?

A. Whether it’s waking up in a tent at Bonnaroo or flying across the country, Yik Yak has given me so many opportunities to travel and meet new people, all while promoting an app that I love. What could beat that? (Other than the nap room in the office.)

Q. If there were one song you had to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A. I can listen to any song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on an endless repeat.

Make sure to check back next week to meet the rest of our interns!
