What happens when a comedian, an artist, and a ping pong champ walk into a bar? Well, I don’t really know because two of them are underage, but I DO know what happens when they walk into the Yik Yak HQ: They crush it. And that’s what we’re all about! Grinding hard, day in and day out, to grow the app and make it even better for you Yakkers.

You’ve already met most of our motley crew, but it’s safe to say that this summer wouldn’t be the same if these three intelligent and witty guys weren’t around.

Say hello to Robert (the comedian), Casey (the artist), and Brexton (the ping pong champ).

Robert Simms, Creative Content Development Intern

Q. Where are you currently going to school and what are you studying?

A. I just graduated from Wake Forest University with an Economics and Philosophy double major.

Q. Where’s your favorite place to hang out while you’re at school?

A. Well, basketball is my favorite sport, I like the way they dribble up and down the court, so I choose the basketball gym.

Q. Why did you want to intern at Yik Yak?

A.  It serves as a wonderful creative outlet. Plus, I wanted to work with Ben Popkin.

Q. What kind of projects are you working on?

A.  I created and now run the Week in Review Peek. I also play a large role in the day-to-day operating of the whole Peek section within the app.

Q. Who’s your favorite co-worker at Yik Yak and why?

A. Ben Popkin because we’ve been friends for years.

Q. What’s the coolest part about interning at Yik Yak?

A. The work environment is dope. The fact that it’s such a social place makes working together very productive and a lot of fun.

Q. If there were one song you had to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A.  I’m gonna cheat the system and go podcast instead so I can hear new episodes. I choose RadioLab.

Q. Where are you currently going to school and what are you studying?

A. Hudson Valley Community College, Digital Media

Q. Where’s your favorite place to hang out while you’re at school?

A. Since it's a community college we don’t really have many cool places to hang out. If I had to choose a place to go, I’d say library… they have cookies there.

Q. Why did you want to intern at Yik Yak?

A. Yik Yak is an awesome app, and when I saw they were hiring a design intern, I applied as soon as I could. I’d been following Daniel and Joe (the lead brand and product designers) for a while and loved the style and direction they were taking the app, as well as the brand’s design. So, of course, I wanted to get in on the action!

Q. What kind of projects are you working on?

A. Refresh animations, refresh animations, and more refresh animations! I’m also working on designing some sweet posters, as well as merch!

Q. Who’s your favorite co-worker at Yik Yak and why?

A. Honestly, everyone who works at Yik Yak is just an all around great person, which makes this question very difficult! Daniel and Joe are definitely awesome to me because we can all just chill and talk about design — I’ve learned a lot from both of them.

Tamby, one of our Android developers, is awesome because we’re like the Android warriors of the office! Where I’m from, everyone’s an iPhone user, so it’s nice to have someone on my side for once.

Lastly, I’d have to say Marcus, solely for comedic relief during the workday. He sits at the desk next to me and has to be one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.

Q. What’s the coolest part about interning at Yik Yak?

A. Free Food!!!!!! J/k. Kinda…. Yik Yak is just an all around awesome place to work. The work I do every day is seen by all of our users which to me, as a designer, is SO cool.

Q. If there were one song you had to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A. Oooooh… Probably My Type by Saint Motel. I’m sure that’ll change in 2 months though.

Brexton Pham, UX/Software Engineer Intern

Q. Where are you currently going to school and what are you studying?

A. Stanford—the best place on earth! (We’re obnoxious, not pretentious, let’s get that straight). And who knows what I’m studying. Computer science is pretty cool, but so are symbolic systems, and philosophy, and chemical engineering, too.

Q. Where’s your favorite place to hang out while you’re at school?

A. Sushirrito. Or Thai Cafe. It’s pretty self-explanatory why—they just have such good quality food, a great atmosphere for family and friends, and the absolutely best sushi burritos/noodles with chicken and peanut sauce. (Any sponsorship inquiries can be sent to [email protected])

Q. Why did you want to intern at Yik Yak?

A.  My mom made me work this summer. No, but realistically I was originally looking for a way to sort of explore a lot of different things in tech (because who the heck knows what they want to do with their lives), and I specifically really got into iOS programming once I got back from school, so I definitely wanted to pursue that this summer. And, if you couldn’t tell, I’m a sucker for the stereotypical, obnoxious, silicon valley-tech startup culture and of course we have an open floor plan office, adjustable standing desks, gliders, and ping pong tables. Who could pass that up?

I wanted to see what went on at a growing startup and being an intern at a relatively small company where everyone knows (and are friends with) each other, I have the chance to literally do just so many different things and get my feet wet with everything. I can go up to anyone and say “can I do this” or “it would be awesome if I could try making this”, and they will be like “get away Brexton” and then say “sure try it out!” I, like, matter as an intern (which is huge).

But for real, though, the ping pong is awesome.

Q. What kind of projects are you working on?

A. Right now I’m looking into an alternative to communicate between client and serverside applications. Also, creating some cool feature prototypes for the app itself and the Apple Watch. Look at me, really, grabbing the world by its horns here.

Q. Who’s your favorite co-worker at Yik Yak and why?

A. Joe because he promised that I could be the best intern and he loves me.

Q. What’s the coolest part about interning at Yik Yak?

A. Definitely being able to walk into the ping pong room and play with the people running this joint. Like, casually. Everyone here plays. It’s insane.

Q. If there were one song you had to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A.  Reflections by MisterWives. Have you heard the song? There’s just nothing wrong with it, like puppies, or sour patch kids.
